Protected Areas in AP Voivodina

Protected Areas in AP Voivodina

Protected areas are the areas which have distinct geological, biological, ecosystem and/or regional diversity and therefore the nature protection act proclaims them to be areas of public interest.

Protected areas are:

  • strict nature reserve,
  • special nature reserve,
  • national park,
  • natural monument,
  • protected habitat,
  • region of exceptional characteristics,
  • nature park.

Strict nature reserve is an area of unchanged natural features with representative natural ecosystems. Its purpose is exclusively for the protection of the original nature, genetic fund, ecological balance, keeping records of natural phenomena and processes, scientific research which do not harm natural features, values, phenomena and processes.

Special nature reserve is an area with unchanged or almost unchanged nature, which is extremely significant because of its uniqueness, rarity or representativeness, and which includes habitat of endangered wild kinds of plants, animals and fungi, without settlements or with rare settlements where man lives in harmony with nature. Its purpose is to preserve existing natural features, genetic fund, ecological balance, keep records of natural phenomena and processes, scientific research and education, control visits and preserve traditional lifestyle.

Special nature reserve can be botanical, forest, ornithological, ichtyological, geological, paleontological, hydrogeological, hydrological, etc.

National park is an area with a larger number of various natural ecosystems of national significance, distinct regional characteristics and cultural heritage where man lives in harmony with nature. Its purpose is to preserve natural values and resources, total regional, geological and biological diversity, as well as satisfy the scientific, educational, spiritual, aesthetic, cultural, touristic, health and recreational needs, and other activities in accordance with the principles of nature conservation and sustainable development.

Natural monument is a smaller unchanged or partially changed natural spacial unit, object or phenomenon, physically clearly expressed, recognisable and/or unique, with representative geomorphological, geological, hydrographic, botanical and/or other characteristics, as well as botanical value formed by human effort, which has scientific, aesthetic, cultural or educational significance.

Natural monument can be geological (historical geological stratigraphic, paleontological, petrological, sedimentological, mineralogical, structural geological, hydrological and other), geomorphological, speleological (caves, pits and other), hydrological (the whole watercourse or part of it, waterfall, lake, peat, and other), botanical, (rare but significant specimens of vegetation, individual tree or group of trees, tree alleys, parks, arboretums, botanical gardens, etc).

Protected habitat is an area which includes one or more types of natural habitats significant for preservation of one or more populations of wild species and their communities.

The objective of habitat conservation is:

  • conservation of endangered and rare types of habitat, ecosystem and/or autochtonous wild species on national and/or international level;
  • providing suitable state of population of autochtonous wild species and/or species;
  • facilitating the smooth taking place of some life phases of autochtonous wild species (spawning, mating, nesting, bringing up the youngsters, wintering, etc.)
  • protection of the most threatened and vulnerable species;
  • facilitating the flow of genes among the species populations;
  • providing migratory paths and resting places;
  • providing scientific research, population management and education.

Region of exceptional characteristics is an area of recognisable appearance with significant natural, biological ecological, aesthetic and cultural historical values, which kept developing as the time was passing by, as a result of interaction between nature, natural potential regions and traditional lifestyle of local population.

Region of exceptional characteristics can be a natural region of exceptional characteristics and cultural region of exceptional characteristics. Natural region of exceptional characteristics is an area of significant biological ecological and aesthetic values where traditional lifestyle of local population has not substantially harmed nature and natural ecosystems.

Cultural region of exceptional characteristics is an area of significant regional, aesthetic and cultural historical value which has kept developing as a result of the interaction of nature, natural potential regions and traditional lifestyle of local population.

Nature park is a region of well preserved natural values with mostly preserved natural ecosystems and picturesque landscapes, intended for preservation of total geological, biological and regional diversity, as well as satisfying scientific, educational, spiritual, aesthetic, cultural, touristic, health and recreational needs and other activities which are in accordance with the traditional lifestyle and principles of sustainable development.

In nature park, economic industries and other activities which threaten its substantial characteristics and values are not allowed.

In national park protective measures and ways of its use are specified by a special law, while for the other protected regions protective measures are determined by an act of declaration of conserved area (law, if the act was proclaimed by the government or decision, if the act was proclaimed by local self-government).

In AP Voivodina there are 132 conserved natural resources under the protection, which is 5,47% of the total area of Voivodina. Out of 132 conserved natural resources in Voivodina, the following are under protection:
